Saltwells 2006

This is a list of the 80 species of birds I saw at Saltwells LNR and Netherton Reservoir during my 105 visits in 2006.

Mute Swan (50) - A pair bred on the canal at Primrose Bridge, raising one juvenile.
Barnacle Goose (1) - one on the reservoir in the mist on December 21st.
Canada Goose (31) - Two pairs bred on the canal between the reservoir and Saltwells Bridge.
Wigeon (1) - four on the reservoir on February 3rd.
Gadwall (1) - three on the reservoir on February 20th.
Teal (16) - Monthly maxima at Mushroom Green Marsh were January - 9, February - 10, March - 6, November - 6 and December - 3.
Mallard (105) - Bred on the canal, with the first brood seen on May 22nd. Peak count on the reservoir of 62 on July 25th.
Shoveler (2) - A male on the reservoir on March 22nd, with another on November 2nd.
Pochard (1) - a male on the reservoir on October 14th.
Tufted Duck (33) - Seen regularly on the reservoir from the start of the year until the middle of March, and then only occasionally until September, when it became more regular. Peak count of 21 on March 2nd.
Ruddy Duck (1) - a male on the reservoir on June 16th.
Little Grebe (53) - Up to eight birds seen occasionally on the reservoir from the start of the year to April 1st, and up to seven birds seen from September 26th to the end of the year. Singles on August 28th and September 8th.
Great Crested Grebe (51) - a pair were present on on the reservoir in the breeding season, but no juveniles were seen.
Cormorant (1) - two birds flew over the reserve on October 14th.
Grey Heron (39) - Up to three birds present in the area throughout the year.
Sparrowhawk (16) - Present throughout the year, with one displaying on April 21st .
Buzzard (22) - Seen thorughout the year, with a pair were present in the wood in March.
Kestrel (12) - A single bird seen hunting on the hill throughout the year, with two on August 29th.
Water Rail (3) - One at Mushroom Green Marsh on January 21st, February 27th and March 2nd.
Moorhen (96) - Bred along the canal, with chicks first seen on May 24th. Peak count of 13 on October 14th.
Coot (105) - Bred along the canal and on the reservoir, with the first juvenile seen on May 22nd. Peak count of 68 on the reservoir on January 15th.
Common Snipe (14) - Up to six birds on the pools at the foot of Netherton Hill from the beginning of the year until April 1st. One on December 27th.
Common Sandpiper (1) - Two on the reservoir on April 20th.
Black-headed Gull (85) - Present until March 23rd. The first bird returned on June 16th. Peak count of 700 on the reservoir on March 2nd.
Lesser Black-backed Gull (97) - Seen in every month. Peak count of 520 on March 2nd.
Herring Gull (33) - Seen on the reservoir in small numbers in every month except May and October. Peak count of 24 on February 17th.
Common Tern (5) - Two on the reservoir on June 7th and 8th, followed by one on July 6th, two on July 24th and one on August 10th.
Stock Dove (39) - Bred in Saltwells Wood. Present throughout the year.
Woodpigeon (105) - Bred in Saltwells Wood, where it continued to roost in large numbers.
Collared Dove (37) - Breeding resident.
Swift (23) - First bird seen on May 9th with the last on August 14th. Peak count of 20 on May 22nd.
Kingfisher (8) - A single bird on four dates from the start of the year until February 3rd. One on four dates from July 16th to September 3rd.
Green Woodpecker (23) - Presumably bred in Saltwells Wood.
Great Spotted Woodpecker (28) - At least one nest in Saltwells Wood. Juvenile seen on June 29th.
Skylark (8) - First of the year were two on Netherton Hill on March 20th. One was singing on the hill from April to June. Four flew over on October 29th.
Sand Martin (2) - One over the reservoir on April 20th, with three on the 28th.
Swallow (5) - two on April 20th were the first of the year, with one on the 27th. Three on September 20th were the last of the year.
House Martin (17) - five on April 30th were the first for the year, with a peak count of 10 on May 24th. One on September 10th was the last of the year.
Tree Pipit (1) - two on Netherton Hill on September 9th.
Meadow Pipit (2) - two on Netherton Hill on September 21st, with fifteen on October 15th.
Grey Wagtail (6) - one on the canal on January 1st and 8th, October 29th and December 27th. Two on the Black Brook on September 26th, with one there on November 29th.
Pied Wagtail (9) - three on the cricket pitch on January 8th. The only sighting in the breeding season was one on April 28th.
Wren (85) - common resident, with ten singing on June 18th.
Dunnock (64) - common resident, especially in the gorse on Netherton Hill. Three singing on April 28th.
Robin (97) - common resident, with the first juvenile seen on June 23rd. Ten singing on April 1st.
Stonechat (4) - singles on Netherton Hill on March 20th and 29th, September 16th and October 11th.
Wheatear (5) - singles on Netherton Hill on March 29th, April 1st and 21st, August 29th and September 9th.
Blackbird (95) - common resident. A male with a white head was seen on May 23rd.
Song Thrush (32) - resident, most commonly seen on Netherton Hill, where three were singing on March 29th.
Redwing (7) - seen on four occasions in the first winter period, and three in the second, with a maximum of sixteen on December 27th.
Mistle Thrush (33) - a pair present in the breeding season, with two juveniles on May 25th.
Reed Warbler (5) - one singing in the reedbed in May and June.
Blackcap (14) - first of the year were two singing on April 20th. Two juveniles seen on June 18th. Last seen were two on September 10th.
Lesser Whitethroat (4) - first of the year singing on April 27th. Last seen on August 31st.
Common Whitethroat (17) - first of the year singing on April 21st, with two birds heard singing on Netherton Hill in May and June.
Chiffchaff (61) - first singing on March 30th. Up to three singing from April to June. One along the canal on December 21st.
Willow Warbler (15) - first heard singing on April 20th. Three birds sang throughout May and the first half of June.
Goldcrest (40) - seen regularly throughout the year. A juvenile in the wood on July 16th.
Spotted Flycatcher (3) - one on September 4th with three on the 11th and one on the 12th.
Long-Tailed Tit (80) - common resident. Maximum of eleven on December 21st.
Willow Tit (2) - singles on January 1st and 21st.
Coal Tit (19) - At least one pair resident in Saltwells Wood throughout the year.
Blue Tit (95) - common resident, with first juveniles seen on June 14th.
Great Tit (93) - common resident, with first juvenile seen on June 23rd.
Nuthatch (23) - at least one nest in Saltwells Wood.
Treecreeper (7) - resident in Saltwells Wood.
Jay (45) - seen regularly in Saltwells Wood.
Magpie (104) - common resident. Approximately 130 roosting in the claypit on January 21st.
Jackdaw (4) - maximum of nine flying over on November 2nd.
Carrion Crow (86) - at least one pair bred in the area.
Raven (1) - One over Netherton Hill on August 29th.
Starling (30) - continues to breed on the surrounding housing estates, often visiting the cricket pitch to feed.
House Sparrow (42) - continues to breed on surrounding housing estates.
Chaffinch (66) - seen regularly throughout the year. Four singing on May 25th.
Greenfinch (69) - four birds singing on Netherton Hill on April 28th. Peak count of ten on January 16th.
Goldfinch (19) - all sightings outside the breeding season, with a maximum of thirteen at Mushroom Green marsh on February 20th.
Siskin (7) - seen on seven dates in the first winter period, with a maximium of sixteen on January 15th.
Linnet (23) - Present on Netherton Hill in the breeding season, with first juvenile seen on June 29th.
Bullfinch (25) - At least one pair present in the breeding season, with first juvenile seen on July 6th.
Reed Bunting (9) - two singing in the reedbed on June 28th.
